2018 Club Finals Night

The Club was very pleased to welcome Bob and Penny Wolfson as Guests of Honour to our Finals Night. Bob is Chairman of Rudford Parish Council and Penny Chairman of the Rudford Village Hall Committee.

The first match of the evening was the Handicap Singles, with Jon Gaskell up against Lee Bruton. It was a very close match where in the second set we ran out of numbers on the score machine! Jon had a two start which Lee overturned in the first set winning 18-21. In the marathon second set Jon came back to win 30-28, his efforts were in vain as Lee won the final set 10-21.

The second match was the Handicap Doubles where, from the qualifying 'Round Robin' of five couples emerged a Final between the pairing of Gordon Shaw and Alan Welsh against Stewart Jones and Margaret Pang, who had a five start. Another close match ensued with Stewart and Margaret finally taking the spoils 22-20, 17-21, 21-13

Next was the Veteran Singles Handicap match between two renowned defenders, Ken Smith and Stewart Jones, who was back for his second final of the evening. Stewart lost the first set 13-21 but came back to win 21-6, 21-13.

The final match of the evening was the Open Singles between Lee Bruton and Gordon Shaw. Lee played exceptionally well to win 16-14, 11-3, 11-8.

Other matches played prior to Finals Night were the Consolation Singles, where a group of four played in a 'Round Robin'. After some very good matches, Stewart Jones proved victorious with Sten Salisbury as runner up.

In the Junior Singles not every junior was available to play so again a 'Round Robin' was played between Alex Greenough, Dinula Gomes and Tom Rogerson. Tom was the winner with Dinula the runner up. Dinula was also awarded the 'Most Improved Junior' Trophy.

The 'Glyn Lloyd Award' for services to the Club was shared between Pete and Sheila Humble
