Finals Night 2017

Around 50 Club members, family, past club members and a few future members enjoyed an evening of good table tennis, entertainment, raffle and food at the Annual Finals Night held on Saturday 6th May 2017 at Rudford Village Hall.

Our Guest of Honour for the evening was Lesley Slack, a local table tennis player who has done a great deal of volunteering including being a Tournament Referee and County Umpire.

There were 4 finals played on the night including the Handicapped Doubles, where Gordon Shaw played with fellow Division 1 player Lee Bruton, and Sten Salisbury (Division 4) paired up with Luke Sherratt (Division 3) receiving a 9 point start. After a close fought match, Gordon and Lee just edged in front winning 21-15, 16-21, 18-21.

Gordon was again playing, this time in the Handcapped Veterans Singles, in which he had to give his opponent, Division 3 player, Stewart Jones, a 7 point start. Again Shaw came out victorious after another 3-set match, winning 15-21, 21-19, 21-13.

The Handicapped Singles was the third final to be played, which saw Sherratt in his second final of the evening, playing Division 1 player, Jon Gaskell. Luke, with a 6-point advantage, was able to overcome Gaskell's combination bat, and played exceptionally well, beating Jon in 2 straight sets 21-13, 21-12. I am sure we will see Luke playing a higher level of table tennis next season.

The Open Singles was the final match of the night, in which Doubles partners, Bruton and Shaw,

found themselves this time at opposite ends of the table. Lee did well to take a game off Gordon, however, Shaw's consistency and use of his pimples proved too much for Bruton, the final scores were 11-7, 11-8, 9-11, 11-3 to Shaw.
