Ann and Mel compete in the Women’s British League 2011/12

This year’s 'Gloucestershire Ladies' WBL team consisted of Lesley Slack (Captain), Ann Barnes and Mel Boulton (both Rudford players) and Natasha Herd. After gaining promotion from the 5th Division last year the team had an opportunity to play at a higher standard in Division 4 this season. This is no easy task as the WBL is a National League with all the best women in the country being involved.

The 1st playing weekend of two was held in Bristol on 24/25th September 2011. On the first day Lesley, Mel and Ann played three matches, losing 6-0 to both AICES and Fusion Ladies, but beating Morpeth Greenhouse “B” 6-0.

Natasha played the two matches on the Sunday, where Cippenham Ladies were beaten 4-2 with both Natasha and Ann winning their two singles games. East Midland Draycott Ladies were also overcome with a 5-1 victory with Natasha and Mel winning 2 and Ann with 1 win.

These results meant Gloucestershire Ladies were in a strong position being 3rd out of 6 going into the 2nd weekend.

The 2nd weekend was played in Doncaster on 4th/5th February, where all teams played each other again.

Lesley, Ann and Mel played all 5 matches. Cippenham Ladies were beaten 4-2 with Ann and Mel gaining 2 wins each.

Tough matches were to follow with two 5-1 defeats against East Midland Draycott Ladies and Fusion Ladies, with Mel gaining both of Gloucestershire’s points. AICES again proved too strong opponents by beating Gloucestershire Ladies 6-0.

Unfortunately, Morpeth Greenhouse “B” had to pull out of the competition, so a 6-0 walkover was gained here.

Gloucestershire Ladies can be proud of their achievements over the two weekends ending up maintaining their position of 3rd in this strong division. AICES won overall and Fusion Ladies were 2nd, meaning promotion next season for both of these teams.

Gloucestershire Ladies are hoping to represent Gloucestershire again next Season in this highly respected League, as it is a good opportunity for Ladies in the county to play in a high standard gaining valuable experience, which they can take forward to next year.
